Irish Mission for the Concha Project

During the Irish mission of the Concha project, Aurélie Mayer (Éveha International) continued her research—primarily bibliographic—across several institutions (National Library, Dublin; McClay Library, Queen’s University Belfast; Maritime Museum, Dun Laoghaire). She also supplemented her data through various visits, including the Ulster Museum in Belfast for the wreck of La Girona, and the Maritime Museums and Archaeology Museums in Dublin.

The month spent in Ireland also provided the opportunity to meet with several local contacts, including:

  • Historic Environment Division | Department for Communities.
  • The Irish Association of Professional Osteoarchaeologists.
  • Members of Kilkenny Archaeology.
  • Members of the HMS Leinster project.

Finally, survey work was conducted in coastal cemeteries (though not exhaustive) to identify sailors’ graves. This preliminary work appears to confirm the similarity in burial practices between France and Ireland.
