The 2017 dry season excavation (April–May) was organized with several objectives linked to the progress of the restoration work:
Sondage 3500: A small sector containing bricks and several sandstone elements was studied in the southern area of the basin.
Sondage 3300: An irregularity in the masonry of the western tiers, discovered during preparatory work for their dismantling, revealed the existence of a conduit connecting the Baray to the Mebon basin. This was carefully studied before being dismantled to allow for the installation of foundation consolidation structures.
Sondage 3100: Following the 2015 dismantling of the eastern section of the axial causeway—which uncovered the remains of a wooden jetty used to access the central islet—the western section was dismantled to conduct preliminary studies for the restoration of the central islet.
Sondage 3200: The central islet was also the subject of an archaeological sounding aimed at understanding the various construction phases of the “shafts” (or “wells”).
