The Concha project brings together about fifty researchers around a broad theme: the multiple development modalities of port cities on the Atlantic fringe, mainly from the end of the 15th to the 18th century. In this approach, the study of the construction of an Atlantic area is linked to the environmental and economic contexts on a local, regional and even global scale. This research involves the analysis of historical, geomorphological, environmental and archaeological data.
Several locations were chosen for the meetings and case studies: Cape Verde, Azores, Sao Tome and Principe, Seville, Lisbon, Dublin, France, Colombia and Brazil. Some sites have been selected on the basis of their importance in the circulation networks of people, resources and knowledge during the ancient periods. Others house research structures that can help ensure the smooth running of this vast project.
In addition to offering researchers an inter-institutional exchange network, the Concha project also focuses on the training of the staff from the various institutions involved in the project, on the outreach to various audiences (exhibitions, conferences, workshops), as well as on the heritage protection reinforcement of each site.
